Purandara Dāsa Punya Dina (Pushya Amāvāsya)
HH Purandara Dāsa – Punya Dina (Pushya Amāvāsya)
He was a
saint, a musician, a poet, a social reformer and most prominently a great
devotee. He played a pivotal role in the Bhakthi movement. He is important to
us and he matters a lot for us in every way. He started his living as a gold
merchant, grown rich in his 30+ years of age, but soon ‘Lobha’ (greed) led him
to ‘Vairāgya’, his ‘worship of Gold (wealth)’ transformed him into the ‘love of
God’ renounced the world and became a Haridāsa, a servant of Srimahāvishnu.
That was HH Sri Purandara Dāsa.
As he got hold of spreading the
glories of the Lord Krishna by singing, he voluntarily undertook making the
society of his times just and fair, by condemning social evils (sins) like
casteism and untouchability. We, the devotees are currently blessed with
1000 of his keerthanās as against the scholars’ opinion of about 400,000
compositions. Singing and practicing His keerthanās in an adorable form
takes one to a state of realizing Sri Krishna, the Vittal at Pandharpur.
On the auspicious event of HH Sri Purandara Dāsa Arādhana utsav today,
we should take an oath to follow his footsteps not only in developing Bhakthi,
also to treat every living being with love and affection irrespective of caste,
faith and form. Only then the society with peace and harmony will prevail in
our and our children’s lifetime too. Jai Purandara Vittala !
