Māgha Purnima - River bath
Māgha Purnima
भागीरथि सुखदायिनि मातस्तव जलमहिमा निगमे ख्यातः
नाहं जाने तव महिमानं पाहि कृपा मयि मामज्ञानम्
Bhāgeerathi Sukha-dāyini Mātastava Jalamahimā Nigame Khyātah,
Nāham Jāne tava mahimānam Pāhi krupāmayi Māmajnānam !
Holy dip in the Sea or River is most auspicious today. We adore this day as a
‘bathing festival’ across the Country and a dip in the Ganges holds a high
spiritual merit. Devathās come onto the earth in human form and take a holy dip at Prayāgrāj where the confluence
of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi rivers take place. This is why bathing in
Ganges on Māgha Purnima fulfill the
wishes soon and leads one to the higher abode by curing diseases, solving all
sort of problems and relieving a realized person from the sins.
गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस् वति
नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मि न् संनिधिं कुरु
Gange Cha Yamune Chaiva Godāvari Saraswathi
Narmade Sindhu Kāveri Jalesmin Sannidhim Kuru
Alternatively, one can take a bath in any nearby river, stream, temple tank or
pond by chanting the ‘Saptha nadi sloka’ mentioned supra, for the simple fact
that Goddess Ganga flows into all this today. For those unable to travel or go
to the nearby stream for the reasons beyond their control, may add a drop of
Ganga water or Gau muthra into the container (bucket) or pot and then take bath
chanting the said sloka, will reap the same benefits.
Namāmi Gange 🙏
