The 15 days of Mahālaya give us an opportunity to express gratitude for all the generations who lived before us in the family, said Srirāmapāda Bhāgavathar, a renowned philosopher and devotional singer. Explaining the importance of Pitru Paksha he said, “It is done as a simple ritual and will take about 10 minutes. The eligible ones, will (must) do the prescribed ‘Tharpanam’ preferably at noon sitting in the south side of the house and offer pinda to the cows or crows. All we have today is because of our ancestors’ contribution to the family. If the yearly ceremonies (Shrāddha) are not done continuously for the departed souls for any reason by anyone in the family tree, the Pitru Devatās will not bless the generations. As a result peace, progress and prosperity diminishes. To come out of such difficult times, the present generation must do the yearly rituals while the Mahālaya Pitru Paksha is most essential and a must.”
Srirāmapāda further says, doing this ritual or pitru paksha tharpanam as it is called, at one’s home is important, whether own or rented does not matter. If there is any opportunity, one can do on any river bank or any other traditional locations as prescribed by our Sāstrās. But the result is ‘one and the same’ he said.
